Examining a textbook critically allows one to evaluate it in light of its function as a teaching resource. The study's overarching objective was to apply Bloom's taxonomy to the reading comprehension issues presented in "English for Iraq," a textbook used in Iraq's second intermediate grade.
The research sample consisted of 282 reading comprehension questions taken at random from the textbook. The different levels of complexity of these enquiries were recorded and categorized using a checklist derived from Bloom's taxonomy. Each cognitive level's appearance in the textbook was then evaluated to determine its relative prevalence. The remaining questions were divided into the categories of application (2.48%), analysis (4.26%), evaluation (6.38%), and creation (0.71%), with remembering and understanding making up the vast majority (49.65%). These results suggest that the reading comprehension questions covered the full range of skills and knowledge covered by Bloom's taxonomy. It was very evident that several of the questions relied on lower-order thinking skills.
